17 cases of trichinellosis occurred in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Eastern Germany, between December 2005 and May 2006. Symptoms included diarrhoea, nausea, fever, facial swelling and muscle pain. Trichinella larvae were found in a muscle biopsy using immunoflourescence miscroscopy. Suspect food vehicles included raw minced pork, uncooked smoked sausage (Mettwurst), ham, bacon and liver, all made from a locally slaughtered home-reared pig. Bacon from the suspect pig was found to have 106 trichinella larvae per gramme of bacon.
